As the world changes so does the needs, wants and demands placed on the automotive industry by consumers. A strong push towards sustainability is pushing auto manufactures to build more environmentally conscious, fuel-efficient vehicles.

When purchasing new vehicle buyers are looking for eco-friendly models with a lower impact on the environment. However, it is vital to keep in mind that the process of manufacturing a new vehicle consumes a large volume of natural resources and energy.  By opting for a used vehicle, you're decreasing the overall carbon emissions associated with your car. Buying a used vehicle or extending the lifespan and practical use of your current vehicle is a form of recycling.

Not all pre-owned vehicles are created equal. It is important to research the environmental implications of a specific pre-owned vehicle in order to determine the most eco-friendly option that meets your goals and fits into your lifestyle.  Look for used car models with high EPA rated fuel efficiency. Smaller, hybrid or electric models are excellent choices as well however, be sure to have a certified technician inspect the condition of the lithium battery prior to committing to purchasing the vehicle. Replacing the battery of a hybrid or electric car can result in both a higher carbon footprint and substantial expenses.

Selecting a preowned vehicle with a well-documented maintenance history offers multiple advantages. Not only can it potentially save you money on future repairs but it also typically signifies that the car is in better overall condition, likely resulting in improved fuel efficiency and a reduced environmental impact. A vehicle history report can help determine vehicle condition.

The age of the vehicle also matters. Newer vehicles may have more advanced emission control systems not available on their older counterparts. While buying a newer pre-owned vehicle may come with a greater expense it can pay off over time with reduced fuel costs and emissions.

Another important thing to keep in mind when shopping for your next pre-owned vehicle is that weight and size matter. You will never be able to get the fuel efficiency of a small car by buying a large SUV or a truck. Smaller, lighter and more aerodynamic vehicles tend to have a lower environmental impact as they require less fuel and generate lower emissions.

With the drastic decline of diesel sedans, coups and hatchbacks being made available in the US market in the last 20 years not many people will be forced to make a choice between Diesel or Gasoline powered vehicles. However, for those of you buying truck or large SUVs a Diesel may sometimes be the better option. With modern technology vehicle manufacturers were able to transform what once was considered one of the higher emission producing engines to something that meets and exceed the CO2 emissions of their Gasoline counterparts. Diesel engine vehicles manufactured within the last 10 years also typically offer better fuel efficiency and tend to go longer without major repairs.  However, it is important to choose wisely as there are some diesel vehicles that do not fit the mold and can actually be more harmful to the environment by emitting heavier particulate matter. It is vital to research the specific models’ emissions prior to settling on buying a diesel vehicle.

When shopping for your next pre-owned vehicle it is crucial to have the vehicle inspected by a certified technician, preferably with years of experience. Their expertise allows them not only to assess the vehicle's condition but also to identify any aftermarket modifications to its emissions systems. It's advisable to steer clear of purchasing modified emissions vehicles as they may carry a heightened environmental impact and potentially cause complications with the vehicle's registration within your state.

By considering all options and thoroughly reviewing all potential vehicles that fit your requirements you should be able to make an informed purchase decision.
